Past Meetings – 2004

American Academy of Ophthalmology, New Orleans, 22-27 October 2004
Date: Sunday 24th October 2004
Time: 15:15 – 17:30 hrs
Title: All You Wanted to Know About Keratoprosthesis (Artificial Cornea)

Artificial cornea, or keratoprosthesis (KPros), are recommended for restoring sight in corneal blindness where penetrating keratoplasty is contraindicated. Patients who have had multiple corneal graft failure and severe corneal vascularization form one group of prospective KPro candidates. The other group has severe ocular surface disease so that a corneal graft will meet the same fate as the cornea it set out to replace. The course will cover the indications and contraindications, and the pros and cons of a range of Kpros. Patient assessment will be covered. Recognizing complications and how they should be dealt with will also be covered.

The course will impart basic knowledge on the assessment of these prospective keratoprosteses cases prior to referral to a specialist center. Attendees will have a broad understanding of complications of KPros, which will facilitate co-management with specialist surgeons.
