Ocular Surface Inflammation As a Threat to Reconstruction and Keratoprosthesis
Synopsis:
Inflammation is a common host response following internal or external insults, and a prelude to formation of granulation and scar tissues. Ocular surface inflammation is no exception but can also be caused by dryness due to the lack of tear film protection and by mechanical friction due to the eyelid blinking when lubricity is lost. Once setting in and becoming persistent, ocular surface inflammation, a hallmark of a number of ocular surface diseases, may produce a vicious cycle leading to destruction of the ocular surface defense with respect to the maintenance of tear film, cicatricial complications to the blink function, and deterioration of epithelial stem cell function. Indeed chronic inflammation has been identified as a high risk factor to surgical reconstruction. In allografts, chronic inflammation facilitates rejection. In keratoprosthesis, the source of inflammation elicited at the interface of host and KPro is at the center stage in KPro design, and presents as a threat to KPro maintenance.
Objective:
The main objective of this joint meeting is to explore deeper the role of ocular surface inflammation in the context of ocular surface reconstruction and keratoprosthesis implantation. After completion of this joint meeting, it is hoped that participants will gain new knowledge and skills that are important to the diagnosis and treatment of ocular surface inflammation so that the success of reconstruction and keratoprosthesis may be promoted.
